Raised in a religious household, Perry began singing in church at a young age. She pursued a career in gospel music before transitioning to pop.

Released her debut studio album under her birth name, "Katy Hudson", in 2001, which was commercially unsuccessful.

Adopted her mother's maiden name, Perry, to avoid confusion with actress Kate Hudson. Signed with Capitol Records in 2007.
